About

Abbey was a strong and consistent runner at Masconomet Regional High School, earning many honors for her racing. Abbey was third at the Eastern Mass. Cross Country Championship her senior year.

Abbey enrolled at Dartmouth College and has raced at a consistently high level for the Big Green. After missing her freshman cross country season due to an ankle sprain, Abbey has earned multiple All-American honors at Dartmouth. Her freshman year was highlighted with a Heps title in the 5000m and backed up with a strong third place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5000m in 15:40.69, the all-time Ivy League record by over 20 seconds.

Abbey's sophomore year at Dartmouth was simply incredible. After winning the Heps XC title on a snowy day at Princeton, Abbey continued her strong racing with a 14-second win the NCAA Northeast XC Regional Meet and was the 3rd place finisher at the NCAA D1 Cross Country Championships. Indoors, Abbey placed 8th in the 3000m at the NCAA D1 Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Abbey had a breakout race at Mt. Sac in April, racing in the 5000m against a very deep and talented mixed field of professional and collegiate runners. Abbey raced to 3rd place in 15:23 as the top collegiate runner, just missing the Olympic "A" standard of 15:20 and chopping 17 seconds off her Dartmouth and Ivy League record. Abbey won Heps titles in both the 1500m (4:17.9) and the 3000m (9:24.64). To get tuned up for NCAA's, Abbey came down to Boston for a quick tuneup at the NB Twilight Meet at Bentley, where she ran 4:16.15 for the 1500m, setting the Dartmouth record. Abbey went on to win the NCAA D1 Outdoor 5000m title at Drake University, the first NCAA individual women's track & field title in Dartmouth school history.

Abbey then focused her energies on racing at the 2012 US Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Abbey won her preliminary round of the 5000m, posting the fastest qualifying time for the finals at 15:41.14. In the 5000m finals, Abbey needed to run 15:20.00 and place in the top three to make the US Olympic team. In the last kilometer of the race, Abbey dug deep as three women came to the line for a photo finish for the last spot on the Olympic team. Abbey ran 15:19.98, earning the Olympic "A" standard, and finished fifth overall, just missing an Olympic team berth by .19 seconds. Congrats to Abbey on a fantastic year of racing!
