Dietz in rush to set records at Bedford

The Lowell Sun
January 20, 2015

BEDFORD -- Erin Dietz is the most accomplished runner Bedford High School has produced. Her coaches will tell you that it's not very debatable.

Self-motivated, meticulous and focused, the senior cross country and track standout in many ways is a prototypical high school superstar. Spend a few minutes with the people who really know her, and it's easy to understand how Dietz became the 2014-15 Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, and was an All-American in the 5K last spring.

What stands out most, however, is Dietz's remarkable humility. Yes, she is an exceptional student and athlete, with plenty to boast about.

WRENTHAM — Going into yesterday’s Eastern Massachusetts Boys Cross Country Championships at Wrentham Developmental Center, all eyes were on the Division 1 race, in which defending champion Lowell and a surging Cambridge had many similarities.

“Our kids are the same makeup,” said Red Raiders coach Phil Maia. “We both have kids who are willing to put in the work and get the results.”

“Everyone’s coming after you,” Maia told his team before the race. “We have a target on our back.”

Working as a team, the Red Raiders remained together in a tight-knit pack for the first 2 miles. “When we run as a group, we run successful,” said Maia. “We were a little broken up at first, but we found each other at the end.”
